What do YOU remember about Nelson?

It was suggested to me that I start a thread that asks the question, "what do you remember about Nelson? So, I'm starting it.

Since I graduated in 1977 (egads, that was decades ago!), my memory is a little sketchy - or maybe it's because there are lots of things that I prefer to forget - but one thing does stand out. I can remember my very first locker in grade 9. Locker #1. That locker is still downstairs, beside the boys washroom, and across from what used to be the drafting classroom (now our SPED room). I figured I had the best locker in the whole school, because only boys took drafting, and they constanly streamed from that classroom and into the washroom, no matter what time of the day I needed to be at my locker.

Somewhere on the inside of the door of that locker is a series of notches, one for each of the guys that I dreamed of asking me to the next school dance.....

I certainly plan on attending the reunion. It has been a while; I graduated in 1962 and again in 1963 with the "honours" diploma. I don't think there is a second diploma for Grade 13 anymore; I don't think there is even Grade 13 anymore!
I certainly don't know why it was called an "honours" diploma. My performance at high school was mostly dishonourable!

Graduated in 1969. Anyone out there from that time who is planning to attend. I need time to refresh my memory by looking everyone up in the Year book.

Nothing was more exciting than skipping class and sneaking a few smokes way up in the auditorium catwalk....or collecting the fleet and chasing down New Street (with attitude) to "Casa Carlo" restaurant for an afternoon of political diatribe (or what we thought the meaning of that was at the time) - it was the seventies after all.

We would change the world and leave our mark (some have?!)and leave "disco inferno" in doubleknit tatters. In spite of Bowie, Yes, Queen and the Who - Some of us were also hooked on Jazz and Swing,(I'm worse for wear as a bona-fide retro-hound) because we all had class and Nelson was that unique kind of place...

While I'm not sure it is still the place it was 30 years ago, it was the catalyst for some exemplary
(and formative!) memories. Anyone that turned 18 the only year it was legal to drink - certainly made the most of it during lunch hour - and we could write our own "excuse notes" to be exempt from class... It must be different now - is the innocent freedom we enjoyed still there?

Yes! I hope to attend!

Recollections include skipping school to drink at 'The Tree' and watch the '72 Canada/USSR hockey series,

Class parties,

School variety shows,

When 'Foot in Cold Water' blew the fuses at a high school dance,

Great 'Mashmakhan' drum solo,

Large crowds and inter school rivalry at football and basketball games,

The 'Middle Earth coffee house' next door in that old house,

Listening to music in the library ( I still listen to 'Egg'and anything Mellotronic (I own 2)),

Learning something,

Great fun with my pals, who can contact me at:
