Spring or Fall? Long weekend or not?

Welcome to Nelson High School's 50th Reunion page! Nelson was opened in the fall of 1957, which means that our 50th school year will end in the spring of 2008. Currently a small cadre of Nelsonites have begun planning the upcoming 50th reunion and we need your input.

Should we hold the reunion in the fall of 2007 or the spring of 2008? There has been some discussion about the merits of each, including the availability of current staff to assist in planning, the ability of former students and staff to attend at different times of the year, and the weather conditions that might determine our activities.

The second question we are asking is whether we should try to hold the reunion on a regular weekend, or on a long weekend (Thanksgiving in the fall, or Victoria Day in the spring)?

Post your responses and give us some feedback before our next meeting on April 26th, 2005!

Either date works for me.

I think elizabeth's opinion is valid, however, for students still in post secondary, it would be more convenent over a long weekend. I think the fall would be better because its too cold in the spring

If teachers are to be invited, I'd prefer an ordinary weekend, spring or fall, as long as I know as far ahead as possible.

A regular weekend in the late spring (as in late may, early june) is the best time.

I attended grade 9 at Nelson in 1957. 50 yrs latter is the fall of 2007. It won't matter to me but I would prefer the fall.

Alumnii, like myself, from out of town would appreciate time to travel, however long weekends are often reserved for family. Fall would be best.

Jo-Ann Lowen(Brien) - '60 grad) Having just attended the July '05 Reunion, I'd say have the '50th' in the Fall. It was just toooo unbelievably hot, inside & out. Since there are committees to look after the organizing/work of the 50th Renunion, Grad/Commencement weekends might work just fine.
Regardless of when it's held, those that can come, will come anyway - from near or far. It was a blast seeing everyone who attended, after 40+ years.

Having been around the Music departmentfor Nelson,s twenty-fifth reunion, It waws easier for us to play this as a May event than an October event. More time to rehearse etc. but not to close to exams and year end stuff.

fall has my vote, preferably 2008.

I'm for the June 2008 date. That worked well and was a great time. Long weekends would kill it for cottages so a regular weekend is preferred.

Anytime is good for me (still live in Burlington). Just found your blogsite - too late for last April's planning meeting, but hope this input is still useful.

Fall 2007 has my vote.A regular weekend would also be my choice, as it would not have to compete with the activities that may be associated with long weekend.

Maybe it's just me.. but if the 40th reunion was held in 96... and the upcoming year is 2006.. ten years inbetween... doesn't that mean the 50th anniversary ought to be this upcoming year?

Personally, I'd like to see a reunion in fall of 2007. That'll give me a summer to get the winter pounds off. Hopefully....not that anyone would recognise me anyway.

Fall, regular weekend but let's get it started. None of us is any younger.

Nelson!
Personally I would prefer fall-the weather is more predictable in the fall and Nelson will not have as much going on during this period (exams, end of the year grad etc.) so they will have more time to successfully organize it over the summer.. As well, some bloggers have made a valid point- possibily a regular weekend would be more accommodating, as Nelson has commencement & people have family obligations. Although It will be great whenever it's held..can't wait!

Does anyone remember Allen Darlow. He attended probably between 1962-1967.

I say spring or fall .. doesn't matter. The more the merrier. The last reunion was a blast ... it was my 10 year reunion .. and I loved it. I look forward to the next one, and having the abilty to catch up with friends and teachers!

I would prefer the Fall to the Spring. A regular weekend might be better if people have family commitments on the long weekends. That would also depend on how many days the reunion festivities would last. The only one I have been to had events on the Friday after school, and more on the Saturday. Personally, I don't have a preference in that respect.

Cheers!

I think Ron Shields' comments make a lot of sense. The staff and students will do much of the planning and giving them a full school year to prepare would probably be appreciated. Having said that, I can't wait regardless of the timing. Missed the 40th but will certainly make the 50th. I would suggest staying away from long weekends.

I agree with Ron Shields, lets give the staff and students ample time to prepare.

Sounds like it could shape up to be a good weekend.

Time to mobilize the class of 85

Fall has my vote. Regular weekend (around Thanksgiving) also has my vote. Look forward to it.

I graduated in 1982 - that was also the 25th Anniversary of Nelson. That would make 2007 the 50th Anniversary year!! If it can be accomplished, sometime in 2007 would be the appropriate choice. It really doesn't matter when - there will always be people who cannot make it. As long as the event is advertised far enough in advance, former students will have the opportunity to plan around it!

I just found this site. I would love to come to a reunion. I think June would be better. People (like me), that are travelling some distance need time to plan. Although I am in Burlington several times a year( my kids, brothers and parents are still there, would need to plan to come...

I am back in Burlington and would love to help plan - is there updated info? I don't see any as of August 24, 2006 Please contact me if there is.

I think a regular weekend in Fall would be great. There will probably be more people available to attend once the summer is over. I did not attend the 40th reunion I look forward to this one! Hope all who read this are passing the word along!

So happy to see that a decision for the 50th reunion has been made. Is there a date set yet? I will pass this on to my other three siblings and we'll be there. Sure hoping there will be a good attendence of the 1971 class.

Lisa (McFadden) Elliot

Looking forward to seeing lots of familar faces and reconnecting with friends that I've missed.

I've seen quite a few Nelson grad's up here in the Barrie area. I'll contact them and send along the website.

P.S. Glad to hear that it is in the fall of 2007. Like someone else said, it gives me time to loose some weight! Alas....I'll never be a size 4 again though ... sigh...

I have two comments.

I turn 50 in '08 so it's best that the Nelson reunion be held in '07 or I just know this is going to turn into a massive birthdy party for me.

And the other thing is, tell Mr. Boychuk that, even though he gave me a 30 year extension, I thought my project on "Watergate" would be ready for handing in in the spring of '08 but it'll actually be ready in the fall of '07, footnotes and everything. (Turns out Nixon KNEW!)
